So we’ve been tweeting as Sophia (and developing her personality along the way - she’s very up and down, a bit of an airhead, and we all agreed we wouldn’t exactly be friends with her if she was real!) and the plan is on the day before our project is released, we’ll have one massive day of tweeting in which a ‘procedure’ goes wrong - then she’ll never tweet again.

RUTH

I’m just thinking about what our ‘ending’ videos may look like (though I know this is really where Zachary is likely to shine through ;P ) I always picture La Jetee in my head, but I’d love to know what you guys were thinking?

ZACH:
We have finished shooting!
It went brilliantly and Stella (who was playing Mademoiselle Sofia Lamare) was absolutely amazing and spot on with her performance! I think it went as I expected, yet incredibly smoothly with little to no stress at all (despite one of my camera batteries failing on me and, therefore, pushing our shoot back an hour).
From this point onwards it is all about EDITING EDITING EDITING! I will be doing all of the video editing, Ruth will be doing the sound editing (and tweeting) and Mr. Alex will be doing a whole heap of blog posts. All of the text/twitter based stuff will be slowly released from now until the entire narrative (hub) is released.
How terribly exciting. :)

Some story pitches/ideas

From Ruth (the best one in this group, obviously :P )

Sadly dialogue isn’t my thing, so I didn’t worry too much about that part of it.

Breast/Buttock implants (pick one, the other can be a video or text medium) AUDIO

The user clicks on a photo of area for improvement, a larger image appears with a Sound Cloud file. The audio file begins, we hear highly emotional/melodramatic music such as Godard may use, a la Contempt, along with static-y, french dialogue (MALE). A bicycle pump starts, getting slower as more air is forced into the implants. A woman’s voice (not necessarily French, but with a french accent) cries out ‘Oh no’ and we hear a bang (which we will create with a balloon pop). The music reaches its peak as this happens, then silence. The audience is left in little doubt as to what happened.

Back scoop

Again the user will see an appropriate accompanying image (maybe our actress holding an ice-cream scoop to her back), and an audio files we use should have the same, or very similar music. Again, french dialogue (MALE) is heard (different sentence). This time, a horrible squelching, suction like noise is heard. It should sound wet, like someone pulling a limb out of some quicksand. Then a gasp of pain. She should then say ‘Now, my posture is perfect’. The user will be left a little shocked and bemused at the pain, and how she tries to sound so casual about it.

Rhinoplasty

A text post with accompanying images embedded. Bandages placed over the nose, but Sophia is posing as if they aren’t even there, ignoring them. The post is not her lamenting, but proud of the pain she is enduring (she starts to talk about how her nose is now unusually weak because of surgery complications, so she has to be very careful not to bump it).

Forehead lift

Text post in which Sophia waxes on about the beauty she perceives in smooth skin, and how she loves her new frozen forehead.

Heh heh - brainstorming for how to film/audio record some procedures for our project, and I got thinking of the Daria episode ‘Too Cute’ from Season 1. Half the girls in the school go plastic surgery mad, including Daria’s sister Quinn, who is worried she isn’t ‘cute’ enough. All the popular girls argue there isn’t anything shallow in it at all, and the plastic surgeon is a complete caricature - so ridiculous in her desire to reshape everyone. Eventually one of the girls has a ‘nasal relapse’ - her new nose caves in. (Ruth)

Props!

ZACH:

Here is just a quick “off the top of our head” list of props that we MAY require for filming. Such props have not been written into our little synopsis’ yet, simply because our synopsis’ have not been written yet!

A Frenchy-looking mirror (I am thinking for the background of the webpage/tumblr page it would be cool to have Sophia looking in the mirror in anticipation for the undertaking of such procedures. We can take a bunch of photos on the day so we have a lot of different options- or we can just use a screen capture from the footage we use.) My sister also has a bathroom which is rather large and rustic looking, so it would be great to have some of the clips set in there as well.

Vacuum cleaner.

Make-up products (for mise-en-scene)- I think Stella could bring some possibly?

Various Jars of sorts - so we can label with things such as “chemical peel” and “Botox”/”Poison” etc.

Syringe or equivalent. (Could possibly make a big hilarious comic looking one out of materials lying around my house.)

Bicycle pump. For enlarging the breasticles.

Chicken fillets? For implants. (Like she opens up a packet of actual chicken breast fillets- that would be hilarious.)

Liquid Eyeliner that is thick enough to draw dotten lines that are going to be visible. (again I can ask stella if she has any- we are NOT using permanent marker.)

-
Ruth Richards I’m pretty sure I have a bicycle pump :) I think that could work well as an audio piece - the sound of the pump, a balloon popping, sirens, melodramatic music (I’m going to have a look for some really dramatic music like they used in Contempt - hopefully there is some creative commons stuff out there)

Stapler (with the staples taken out for safety)

Were we going to do a lap band thing? I think you or Alex mentioned something about how wouldn’t it be funny if it looked like she was swallowing a belt (that would be easy to fake)
-
Zachary McSweeney good ideas ruth!! And I think with this project, because it is obviously a non-money making transmedia project, we can be a little loosey-goosey and lenient with any external content that we use. I think we wont have a problem with that. (Again, I am talking about using possible a small amount of frenchy dialogue from something and blending it into the background of our ambience and what not- like get REALLY creative and experimental with the sound. No-one will be able to tell what is sourced from where.) I will give you some examples next time we meet up. Stapler is a brilliant idea! Belt idea is also excellent!! ALSO if we do anything with sound- I think we should also get photos of whatever it is that we are doing audio clips for, as to give us a visual aid if necessary! What do you think?

Sorry, I am rambling- my head it just bursting with ideas!
-
Ruth Richards I think so - like if you click on say…her boobs for the breast job, just a different/bigger picture pops up? People want to know what kind of procedure is happening!
-
Zachary McSweeney Yeah! So if you click on her boobs or whatever, a bigger picture appears with possibly her holding the bicycle pump with an excited expression on her face, then underneath the picture it might say “click to listen” and that would open up a new window with the audio file that plays from soundcloud. You could get SO creative with the usage of just sound…because its like offscreen action- you can hear everything but you are not entirely sure what is going on- the viewer has to use their imagination! :D good work ruthy

-

Here are all the procedures that we will be covering in our little transmedia artefact- how utterly exciting!

Of course, we will only be making video clips for a select few of these procedures, for the rest we will have images, sounds, twitter feeds and blogs that explain what happens when Sofia undertakes such procedures.

WRITING OUR MASTERPIECE…

ZACH reporting to you lovelies here:

Hey guys! I have had a few ideas which may change the way in which we write our little clips! Remember- I am only looking for loose synopsis’ as I want to keep the shoot really fresh and almost unrehearsed- I am not worried about continuity that much!!

Anyway, I have been watching a LOT of french new wave stuff. And there seems to be a LOT of narration from random dudes. This may make our “french-esque sound” more easy to achieve than I thought! What if I do the french narration!??!? This would ONLY be lightly placed throughout the clips…and I was even thinking only put in a few clips. I was thinking the narration could be used for a little “introduction video as such” and wherever else- I’m purely throwing around ideas. But I remember watching the intro to “une femme est une femme” and they even had Karina announce “lights camera action!” as a sort of introduction- in this case we could really play with the form of “film” itself by introducing these concepts. Even I was thinking of having the end result clips either dubbed in French [by another woman] OR not dubbed at all [having diegetic sound and music, yet no sound of dialogue whatsoever- then have english subtitles]. Or a mixture of these two. The possibilities are endless!

Listen to this preview- I quickly did it and obviously its shite french but I would make sure the grammar is right and I have got the accent down pat before we record the real narration:

So I think my point is- feel free to get creative without having the restrictions of the “film form” itself.

Here is our location!
We are thinking of shooting in 2.35:1 aspect ratio, which is the traditional French New-Wave aspect ratio primarily utilized in the 60’s. This will allow us to shoot charming wide shots and really establish the space we are shooting in.
In this image you will also notice that it has been colour graded and filtered so that it has a very authentic black and white aesthetic which could be compared to the aesthetic of films such as Vivre Sa Vie (1962).
